The Małopolska Garden of
Arts designed by Ingarden
& Ewy Architects is a cross between two institutions: the Juliusz
Słowacki Theatre and the Malopolska Region Library.
The
four-story building which cost 47
mln zł (co-financed
from EU funds) is called the garden for a reason as inside there
is a lot of greenery. Even the special opening in the perforated roof of the
garden was formed so that the maple tree inside could grow. What's more, a part
of the complex is entered into the outline of the old, 19th-century horse-riding
arena. To reveal the
historical facade of the old
hall architects put
the glass area that shows the wall rebuild
with over a hundred-year-old cleaned bricks.
Altogether, the
Garden of 4300 sq.m. houses a modern art and media library, theater wing with
cinema, concert hall, and café, as well
as multiple premises for all art-related activities.
This way dramas, concerts, exhibitions and film screening can be performed,
along with conferences, art auctions or fashion shows.
In
February 2013 Malopolska Garden Art in Krakow - as
the most beautiful cultural building
of the year - received
the award in a competition organized by the prestigious portal ArchDaily. In
April 2014
it won a platinum statuette of
a prestigious A 'Design
Awards 2013-14, which appreciate the best architectural projects
and design from
around the world.
